Guidelines on Book Donations

Donated books

General policy

Due to the cost of shipment and the fact that English is not the first language in Somalia we are mainly collecting books and educational materials that give direct aid to the educationists and students. Textbooks, primary through college level and higher education are always in great demand.

The Current Book Appeal

We would be very grateful of the following:

  • Books with special relevance to the history, developments and studies of Somalia and to the region in general.
  • Non-fiction children through adult reading books that are hard-cover or quality soft-cover.
  • Post-secondary textbooks, specially, GCSE and A levels text books on all subjects.
  • Reference books such as encyclopaedias and dictionaries 1990 or newer.
  • Medical, nursing, Sciences, Geographic, textbooks & journals
  • Books on development and general DIY.
  • Academic journals from the past 10 years.
  • School supplies paper, pencils, pens, etc. are always needed.

Age and condition of books

  • Books should be in good condition and no older than 10 years except books used for history or research purposes.
  • Books on technology and frequently changing subject should not be older than 5 years.

To verify the relevance:

  • If you would like to donate books in our subject list then we do not need to inspect them.
  • If not sure then depending on the quantity we can come on site and inspect to collect what we think would be suitable for the project.
  • You can also send us the list of the items that are to be cleared from your list, and we can make our selection in that way.

Please DO NOT SEND any of the following

  • Paperback romance novels.
  • Books on subject that would be seen a culture sensitive for the local Community.
  • Books that are too ethnocentric in their point of view such as the biography of Shakespeare or the history of New Hampshire.
  • Spanish French or German language books.
  • Any magazines, except the academic journals.
