HORN AFRICA FLOODING RELIEF APPEAL

People are facing eminent threats by attacks of crocodiles, snakes

Somalia has been going through difficulties in the past 16 years, with the last two years been the worst in terms of natural disasters; the Asian Tsunami followed by drought in the beginning of 2006 replaced by an opposite disaster, flooding. The hardest hit areas are the most populated agricultural land of the South and the surrounding two rivers of Shabelle and Juba. Through the drought (Feb to March 06), people have lost their animals, crops, and homes and the first chance of recovery turned out to be another disaster dashing out all their hopes. Torrential rains are forecasted to continue for another month. Breakouts of waterborne diseases are likely to cause further tragedies after water descends.

On the top of all that, many analysts and humanitarian organisations are warning of a catastrophic manmade disasters in the events of all-out war between the weak National Transitional Government protected by thousands of the Ethiopian army inside Somalia and the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) who are in control of much of the South Somalia. With each part intensively bringing in to the conflict their own regional and international alliances, the conflict is quickly escalating to a regional conflict. The consequences of such conflict, is expected to be enormous and millions of innocent people in both end of the conflict will be caught not only because of the war, but also because of the lack of logistics and infrastructure as roads and bridges have been washed away by the flooding in which international aid organisations would use in order to save human lives.

Zaylai Foundation is sending £200,000 worth of food and medicines in response to the flooding and is still raising money in order to provide speedy relief and assistance to the thousands of people in the effected regions. In conjunction with local, intentional NGOs including UN agencies and the Somalia Communities in the west, Zaylai Foundation is developing the formation of a rapid relief response group, in order to prevent a humanitarian crisis in the events of breakout of all-out war in Somalia.
